Look up the history of the dictionary or something, and you should find it. I know someone a billion years ago (exaggeration) wrote it, and it because famous and that it was in America, and half of that might be wrong, but that's really it. look it up, I bet you'll find information on the first one.

the second is called: A Compendious Dictionary of the English Language 鈥?A Facsimile of the First (1806) Edition - copyright 1970;

the third is: A Handy Dictionary of the English Language - copyright 1877.

That's it for the older (or facsimile of older) ones.

You can name your child whatever you want... but remember they have to live with that name and can spend the rest of their lives despising you for giving them such an awful name.

I also think that everyone else can laugh at you.

Reply:You can create any kind of name you want. Personally, I have a long name, and it's a pain to have to spell it all the time for other people. Reply:I think it would be hard for your child to learn how to write one of these names, and every one they meet will always mis- pronounce it. these words you have written sound like they would be on the back of a cleaning product for ingredients. Think of your child and how they would be made fun of with a name you would choose. that they would be stuck with for the rest of their life.
Reply:Of course you can make your own name. Just remember that it shouldn't be difficult to pronounce or spell. The schools want children to be able to write their first and last names by the age of 3 now!
Reply:Sounds like the name of the imp from the other dimension in the Superman comic books. You can make up anything you want, but just don't ever burden a child with your own desire to be unique or creative. You created the kid, so be happy with that and give him/her a name that will make its life easier. Life is tough enough without being saddled with this stupidity.

"Studies showed that children with odd names got worse grades and were less popular than other classmates in elementary school. In college they were more likely to flunk out or become “psychoneurotic.” Prospective bosses spurned their résumés. They were overrepresented among emotionally disturbed children and psychiatric patients.

Some of these mental problems might have been genetic — but it was still bad news."

The book is a Portugese(?)-English dictionary compiled by a guy who didn't speak English, so all the translations are wrong. (Portugese might not be the correct language here. The one time I actually saw this book was about eight years ago, and my memory is a bit foggy.)

Doe's anybody know where i can find a last name dictionary for a real person?
Spelling of names can be tricky. Especially if you misspell spell (speel, as above). I don't know of a website for last names, though I'm sure if you do a search for one you can come up with at least one such site. I use as a resource a book of 20,000 first and last names, "The Writer's Digest Character Naming Sourcebook." Although mine was published in 1994, I would say that Writer's Digest Books has an updated version still in print. If you're interested, write them at F%26amp;W Publications Inc., 1507 Dana Avenue, Cincinnati, OH 45207, to inquire. It's an excellent source of names.

What is the name of good Spanish/English Dictionary?

I already have a simple student/ travelers dictionary pocket dictionary and a Barron麓s 501 Verb Book. I want a rather nice dictionary that is a good value.

What is the name of good Spanish/English Dictionary?
I own the Oxford Spanish Dictionary: Spanish-English , English-Spanish. That edition is out of print but you can get it on www.alibris.com The new edition is the Oxford Spanish Dictionary..It also has Spanish-English, and English-Spanish. For a limited time it comes with a cd-rom. You can get it with the cd-rom on Amazon for around $47.00 and it ships with free shipping.

I love the Oxford dictionary that I have. It has most of the words that I want to look up and it gives example sentences in Spanish. It also covers the regional variations of Spanish.I recommend it highly. I hope that this helps.

It is very good, it has the romanji pronunciation and the kanji so you know how to write it properly. It even has the subtle stresses that Japanese put on their words written in the pronunciation. That and I think that the words that if gives are very good and common words.

Has anyone noticed that recently the name "OSAMA" is in the spelling dictionary?

I recently noticed that somehow "Osama" has been put into the spelling dictionary for YA. It is my understanding that you cannot add anything to the dictionary, so I am wondering how it got there. It is now the default for "Obama" so you have to be very careful that you don't choose the wrong spelling. Do you think that this is just a coincidence, or what?

Has anyone noticed that recently the name "OSAMA" is in the spelling dictionary?
Yes. It is because the US Homeland Security made that word a keyword. This is so that if any Internet user typed any of the keywords that matches any word in their database (for example, "Osama", "bomb", "anthrax", "nerve gas", etc.), that user will be monitored for possible links with terrorists.

I'm pretty sure that they are reading this answer right now.

On Word dictionary ypou can add a word if you use it all the time and it is spelled correctly. My last name is never spelled the same way, Is there a waty to add it to the dictionary as well as a hundred other words and abreveations.

How do I make additions ot the Yahoo e mail dictionary, Every time I spell my name it says wrong,?
Sorry, but Yahoo does not support 'personal' dictionary entries. You can try creating your emails in something like Word, that does allow it, spell check them there, then copy %26amp; paste them into your email. This is safer to do anyway, as it means you can save the document and not lose your email if the system crashes.

SA Friends- Can Anyone Name :Dictionary crowned Word of the Year Is?
it was wOOt hehe
Reply:Actually it is w00t, Merriam Websters dictionary word of the year. I doubt any other dictionary will pick it. No-one knows how to say it 'cos of the two zeros!

Apparently it is now 'clever' to replace certain letters with numbers which somehow look similar eg A - 4. Really smart, I don't think. Difficult to read and more difficult to type than the letter itself.
Reply:I didnt even know that word existed until now...

Thanks for the link cakes..

Im writing an essay, and refering to American Heritage Dictionary of English Language, do I have to underline it or irilicize it?

Do I italicize a name of a dictionary in my essay?

Every time i write Obama it asks me do i want to change it to Osama, Strange that!!!

Why wont the good people at Yahoo add the name Obama to there Dictionary?

Experience we can trust

Reply:Because dictionaries don't recognize proper names. When I type in my name, I get things like Konc or Konica, strange things like that that is nothing like mine. The dictionary just takes the last name, and tries to change a few letters to match the next closest spelled object, even though it shows no relation at all.

Just like "lol"!!! LOL is used VERY often, yet I still have to go through spell check and hit "ignore" everytime I send an email or write someone in Word.

Just realize that everyday our language expands and needs updating. But I don't know why there would be Obama's name in the dictionary. Because it's not something you can describe. He's just a person. But idk, maybe they will someday.
Reply:Excellent point. Your received answer suggests that the people at Yahoo are more intellingent that many voters.

The people at Yahoo are not required to make life easier for us. Hence, keep looking for Osama to appear...especially if BO wins.
Reply:Because if he does not win in November, we'll probably not be talking about him again. I think even Obama himself knows that.
Reply:Osama is more well known than Obama. That's why. D:

What's the official 'dictionary' name of a bar rag?

I was watching MTV road rules a few years ago and on a scavenger hunt the list stated a strange word that nobody knew - after looking it up the definition was a bar rag - what is that word/name?

What's the official 'dictionary' name of a bar rag?
Don't know if it's the official dictionary name or not, but one old name is "huckaback" = "toweling of linen or cotton, of a distinctive absorbent weave."
