Look up the history of the dictionary or something, and you should find it. I know someone a billion years ago (exaggeration) wrote it, and it because famous and that it was in America, and half of that might be wrong, but that's really it. look it up, I bet you'll find information on the first one.
Reply:you really did not say what kind of dictionary you needed so i will give you three and hope it helps

The first is called: An American Dictionary of the English Language; Containing the Whole Vocabulary of the First Edition in Two Volumes Quarto; The Entire Corrections and Improvements of the Second Edition in Two Volumes Royal Octavo; To Which is Prefixed an Introductory Dissertation on the Origin, History, and Connection, of the Languages of Western Asia and Europe, with an Explanation of the Principles on Which Languages are Formed. - the copyright date is 1853;

the second is called: A Compendious Dictionary of the English Language 鈥?A Facsimile of the First (1806) Edition - copyright 1970;

the third is: A Handy Dictionary of the English Language - copyright 1877.

That's it for the older (or facsimile of older) ones.
