I want to name our daughter Renu...like renew...what's the origin/meaning other than the obvious dictionary?

Renu is an East Indian name- I went to school with a girl named with a girl named Renu (pronounced Ree-noo), not sure what it means. Might be a teasing name though...

I want to name our daughter Renu...like renew...what's the origin/meaning other than the obvious dictionary?
It's the name of the contact lens solution I use.
Reply:Renu is an Indian name which means "atom"
Reply:Please don't saddle your child with this name (which is also a contact lens product). Imagine the years of kidding she will get if she decides to become a librarian!

If you are set on using this name, why not save it for the middle name? Less embarrassing.
Reply:You might want to reconsider the spelling of it as that's the brand name of a contact cleanser.

If you like the meaning, then maybe find a different language of the word and name her that.
Reply:I think it's a beautiful name! Forget everybody else!
Reply:You want to name your daughter after contact lens solution?! How embarrassing for her!
Reply:Will she be embarassed by the name when she is older?

Direct me to a dictionary list of file names with the extention .exe?

I get a lot of popups from Zone Alarm, asking if I want to allow a certain .exe to load.

Example: What is Isass.exe and what does it effect on my PC?

Direct me to a dictionary list of file names with the extention .exe?

Hope this is useful
Reply:I can help you with this.

Usualy when ZoneAlarm prompts you, it will give you an opinion of rather you should allow the process or not. But if your unsure about it then do what I do:

goto www.google.com and type in the name of the .exe and it will usualy have a link about the process information. Here is an example using lass.exe and this is the results I got by searching

lass - lass.exe - Process Information

And thats a link, so you click it and read on the page about the process. Or just goto this website and type in the .exe name and it should help you out:

Why is the name of a book "the bible" in the dictionary?

when I search the definition of or read the dictionary, under the word bible, it only describes what is in the book the bible (Christian old and new testament), not the definition of the word? is it derived from the word bibliography? (a collection of books on a certain subject),when it is just the name of a fiction book? putting it in the dictionary as a word, then advertising the books contests as "sacred" puts it above other books that are not listed as words, free propaganda. how did the name of a book get word status. and when was it decided?

Why is the name of a book "the bible" in the dictionary?
You have a simplified dictionary. Mine contains (beside the reference to the "Bible" -- scriptures) the following: a reference publication esteemed for its usefulness and authority; a bird-watchers bible.

Most collegiate (college) dictionaries will contain this definition.

Edit: A compact dictionary is what I consider to be a simplified dictionary. Definitions are left out to allow for printing the compacted version. Sorry, but if you want to use a dictionary to find most of the definitions of a word, you'll have to go for one that is at least college caliber. It really wouldn't hurt to own an unabridged dictionary, as far as that goes.

Dianetics is a literary work of L. Ron Hubbard. Names of literary works generally do not appear in dictionaries. Evidently, the authors of the two dictionaries I have (along with yours) do not consider Scientology to be significant enough to give it an entry. Surprising, Mormon, Mormon Church, and Book of Mormon are in both of my dictionaries, so evidently any reference to religions has to exist for maybe a hundred years or more (The Church of Scientology was organized as a legal entity in 1953). I don't have an unabridged dictionary, so I don't know if you'll find Scientology in a recent edition or not. I suspect you'll find a reference in an encyclopedia, though.

Generally, I'll use both an encyclopedia and a dictionary, as needed. I prefer wikipedia for a quick reference over my set of Britannicas.
Reply:The definition is correct. Bible mean a collection of small books. You may feel offended because the Bible is also inspired of God as 2 Tim. 3: 16 %26amp; 17 brings out. The dictionary has to be unbiased and open minded in it's description of words and of people. Also there are other "holy" or "sacred" writtings other than the Bible. They may not be sacred to you because of your personal belief, but they are for others.
Reply:It is most certainly a work of fiction. A collaborative effort, compiled over a number of centuries, translated countless times with little or no quality control and badly misrepresented in many quarters.

It is undoubtedly a great work of literature. Its influence has been reverberating around the world for centuries.

But ithen we could describe many works of literature in just the same way. Tales From The Arabian Nights. The Karma Sutra. The Koran....they are all very similar in many ways. What makes the bible so special to your mind?
Reply:Bible is a word so common and widely used that it warrants a dictionary entry. It means "book/s" that should be in the etymology. Get a better dictionary. OED is good it will give you expanded meaning and usage, etymology, and early usage dates and examples.
Reply:Because the Hebrew word for bible just meant book.

And if that's the way they decide to define it, and you have a problem with it, buy a new dictionary.
Reply:Originally the bible was called "The Book"
Reply:Low Self Esteem Support Group will meet Thursday at 7 pm. Please use the back door.
Reply:Biblioteca = Spanish word for library.

Any resemblance?
Reply:Because believe it or not some ppl dont know what a bible is. Some children anyway

Can u name the site to get list of words (other than those 3000) used to define advanced reader's dictionary?

What do you mean be 3000? Is that all there is in the Advanced Learners Dictionary? I've been meaning to read it since a child(having had great belief in myself) but never did. I have no idea what isn't in it then. Sesquipedalian(love the word)? Not sure. If you take this English advancement seriously though, learn three other languages; ancient Greek, Latin %26amp; French. Then there will be no further pretense about being advanced. You will be.

The alphabet that tells us how to pronounce words is the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). "Diacritics" are the symbols that appear above various letters in the IPA.

They give you an option for your name, such as whether you want a name based on beauty, wealth, knowledge etc. All you have to do is enter your full name and gender and it creates it for you.

I did mine ages ago and it came out as Mao Kang Ren, which I now use whenever I talk to a Chinese exchange student.

Hope you enjoy your new name!

Be aware though, that your name will change every time you do it as different words have different meanings, so play around with it until you're happy.

Languages similar to English have many times names that are same or resemble some names in English, but to translate a name, especially a name of a language that has no roots in the English language is just not possible.

well this is not one word.. but not one word rhymes with orange. But this rhymes anyways : door hinge.
Reply:using "slant rhyme", you can use lozenge, boring, forage, porridge, door-hinge, score bench

Bridget originates from the video game Guilty Gear XX, where he sought to prove his masculinity in a very short nun's habit, using a pink yoyo, and with the help of his teddy bear, Roger.

A beautiful female who is slightly goofy and really crazy in all areas of her life; never forgotten and always lovable.

The definition of Kayla has changed dramatically over time to rest at the above definition. The word "Kayla" is actually derived from a Greek mythology female deity who would prey on innocent men in the way of a dinner whore. The deity had one fatal weakness: a hysterical male deity by the name of Ross who only had to speak her name to suppress Kayla's alluring powers.

The girl I went out with last night was such a Kayla, but for some reason she hasn't called me back; I even paid for her dinner!

Someone who is small yet overtly aggresive whilst at the same time being very brightly coloured. A becky believes themselves to be "well 'aard" without any evidence or history of being such. Often seen to 'hen-peck' those around them that they perceive as being either weaker ... or simply ... shorter. Feed mainly on green items of any type which explains the requirement for a becky to locate themselves near a lavatory.

"I wish she'd calm down and leave him alone ... she's really starting to do a becky".

Reply:In the Marines, a "Jody" is a generalized term meaning: any man who stays home while everyone else goes to war. He gets to enjoy all the things the Marines are missing, more specifically the Marine's girlfriend back at home while the Marine is away on active duty. The reason that they're called Jody specifically dates back to black soldiers in WWII. They took a character from old blues songs named Joe the Grinder (or Joe D. Grinder) who would steal the ladies of inmates and soldiers, and clipped his name to Jody.

That's why they say, "Jody's back home, ******* your girlfriend."

In Renaissance England, the Molly was a homosexual who frequented one or more Molly Houses (homosexual gathering places and brothels). The molly is distinguished from the earlier sodomite much as the 'queer' of today claims a distinct identity from the 'invert' of freud's writings.

Why is Obama,s name is not in the Y/A spell check dictionary?

When I fall to capitalize the second C in McCain's name spell check corrects me but every time I write Obama the spell check marks it as misspelled.

Why is Obama,s name is not in the Y/A spell check dictionary?
TRUE!! Also, I noticed that it now tries to change Obama to "Osama" which it didn't do before this August. Someone at Yahoo is letting their personal feelings get in the way of their job.
Reply:Good Question.

Every time I write Obama the spell check wants me to change it to Osama.

Given Obama's long time relationships with thugs and Terrorists I think that is remarkably appropriate.
Reply:Palin is the same way, for a little bit if was fixed but that was for a very brief time.

The only thing I can think of is that the software code is too complex and it just causes more problems.

Y!A has been quite "buggy" lately.
Reply:It probably will be eventually as will the American Anthem be changed to include his name. The Pledge of Allegiance will most likely be a pledge to Obama too.
Reply:The same thing happens to me and it shows osama instead. It shows an error on his name in spell checker. Somebody needs to correct it.
Reply:Why don't you try asking a Yahoo! employee? There's a link at the bottom of this page where you can tell them what you think they can do to make Yahoo! Answers better.
Reply:Because even computers don't know who Obama really is.
Reply:This place is owned and operated by grumpy gray haired old men who hate Democrats. Even after he is sworn in as president their spell checker won't acknowledge him.
Reply:Same thing happens with Messiah.. when you fail to capitalize it.. Obie is THE ONE!!

=o)
Reply:PERHAPS A REPUBLICAN POLITICAL AFFILIATION.

NOT FAIR AT ALL -BUT I AM USE TO IT.
Reply:Probably someone really feel that he is an " Osama" and not really fit to lead this country. Osama has no love for America. Wasn't that the same with Michelle Obama who had nothing to be proud about until Barrak received the party nomination?
Reply:Yes, I have complained several times re: this, they are retards
Reply:Why bother, in a few weeks, no one will be talking about him anymore.
Reply:Because it's a unique name...
Reply:Its pretty Ridiculous.
Reply:BECAUSE THE PEOPLES WHO RUN YA IS RACIST BIGOTS.

THERE I SAID IT YA YOU HAVE HAD PLENTY OF COMPLAINTS AND STILL YOU HAVEN'T CHANGE IT .
Reply:Probably because no one has put it in there yet?
Reply:Palin isn't recognized either who cares?
Reply:i know it kills me. and the first suggestion is always osama
Reply:Must be a McCain smear...
Reply:Because the people running Y/A are not that swift. Palin's name also isn't in there, but at least that won't matter two weeks from now.
Reply:Neither is the word LOL, so what's your point?
Reply:why do you have to ask such a stupid question...

Is there a specific name for the artwork included in dictionaries?

I'm trying to find out more about who drew the line drawings of older dictionaries - in particular my 75 year old Funk and Wagnall.

Is there a specific name for the artwork included in dictionaries?
Look at the front of the dictionary by the publisher's name and it should also list the name of the illustrator. The pictures are simply called illustrations as far as I know.
Reply:I don't have a copy to look at to be sure, but most likely the illustrations are woodcuts, or etchings, or other types of prints, possibly (probably) by several diffrent people.

*shrugs* If you're looking for something "in the style of," googling woodcuts, (copper) etching, or linoleum prints might help.

Pronunciation guide to non-dictionary based words/name ???

Being a keen Linguistic myself, especially interested in Phonetics, I often check the "phonetics" of a certain word using this dictionary:

http://dictionary.cambridge.org/define.a...

I wonder if there's something similar that shows the phonetics (i.e. the pronunciation guide) of person's name, company name, city names, etc. (since this dictionary fails to do so, I'm afraid).

I often use www.dictionary.com to check pronunciation guide of certain person or city names but it doesn't cover everything.

Is there any dictionary that specialises in giving the pronunciation guide of say city like "Kyoto" (Japan) or company name like "Anheuser-Busch" (Budweiser) or "Peugeot" (car), personal names like "Vincent" or surname like "McDonald/Hoffman/Smyth", etc.

Pronunciation guide to non-dictionary based words/name ???
Hi, try the Cambridge english pronouncing dictionary by Daniel Jones, i'm not sure if they have a website, coz i couldn't find it. But the book has most of the pronunciations you are looking for.

Kyoto - 'kjeu.teu/ki'eu.teu/ki:ou.tou (eu as in diphthong low)

Peugeot - p3:zeu/p3:zou/pu:zou/pju:zou (z as in measure)

Vincent - vint.s(shwa)nt (the shwa sound is very slight)

Smyth - Smith(th as in your theta)/smaith

McDonald - m(shwa)k'dan.(shaded shwa)ld/maek.da:n(shaded schwa)ld

Hoffman - ha:fm(schwa)n

Hope this helps..
