Every dictionary has a nice pronunciation key to help us out. Anyone know the names for these symbols?
The alphabet that tells us how to pronounce words is the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). "Diacritics" are the symbols that appear above various letters in the IPA.
Reply:well the symbols, which represent sounds are called phonemes or phones. the other symbols indicate stress and are called stress marks

these are diacritical marks
